Leadership: the importance of looking back

I was in Petra (one of the 7th wonders of the world) last week and took a 1,000-steps, one-hour hike up to the El-Deir (the Monastery), an amazing structure carved into a mountain and built by a people long gone. During the climb, as I focused on the steps ahead of me, the searing heat beating on my head, I realised I was concentrating on the present climb and the future reward of a cool drink of water that I neglected to see how far I had come up on the climb. So, taking a moment, I looked back, and WOW, I had come a long way. Much further along than I had even realised. It made me pause and think of our role as leaders and the need to remind ourselves and our teams how far we have come.

As leaders, we often find ourselves engrossed in the immediacy of our tasks and the anticipation of future goals. We are conditioned to push forward and to constantly seek improvement, innovation, and success. While this forward-thinking mindset is crucial, and one I subscribe to wholeheartedly, it is equally important to take a moment to reflect on our journey. This reflection provides a sense of accomplishment, fuels our motivation, and informs our future strategies.

The importance of reflection

In the rush of day-to-day responsibilities, it is easy to overlook the progress we have made. However, taking the time to look back can offer valuable insights. When I paused during my hike to the Monastery, the view of the path I had already conquered was breathtaking (see photo). It was a reminder that each step contributes to our overall journey, no matter how small.

In the professional realm, this reflection can take many forms. It might be revisiting the milestones we have achieved, the challenges we have overcome, or the skills we have developed. Recognising these achievements is not about dwelling on the past but about appreciating the growth and resilience that have brought us to where we are today.

Celebrating milestones

Celebrating milestones is an essential aspect of leadership. It acknowledges the hard work and dedication of the entire team. When we recognise these achievements, we boost morale and reinforce the behaviours and efforts that led to success and those we want to see repeated. This, in turn, fosters a positive and motivated work environment.

Think about the major projects your team has completed, the innovative solutions they have developed, or the times they have gone above and beyond to meet a deadline. Celebrating these moments, whether through formal recognition or informal gestures, can impact team dynamics and individual satisfaction.

Learning from the past

Reflection is also a powerful tool for learning. Each step in our journey, whether successful or not, provides lessons. By analysing our past experiences, we can identify what worked well and what could be improved. This continuous learning loop is vital for personal and professional development.

Building resilience

Looking back at our journey also highlights our resilience. The challenges and setbacks we have faced and overcome are testaments to our strength and determination. As leaders, sharing these stories of resilience with our teams can inspire and empower them to persevere through their own challenges.

When we acknowledge our difficulties and celebrate our ability to overcome them, we create a culture of resilience. This culture is essential in today’s ever-changing business environment. I truly believe it equips our teams with the mindset needed to navigate uncertainty and emerge stronger.

Encouraging a reflective culture

Encouraging a culture of reflection within our teams is just as important as our own personal reflection. This can be achieved through regular feedback sessions, team meetings focused on retrospective analysis, or even informal discussions about what has been learned from recent projects.  Make it a normal process with the team, and it will become a much-anticipated agenda item.

When team members are encouraged to reflect on their work, they become more self-aware and proactive in their development. This not only enhances individual performance but also contributes to the overall success of the organisation.

Personal reflection as a leader

Personal reflection is equally crucial for leaders. It allows us to evaluate our leadership style, decisions, and impact on our teams. By looking back at our own journey, we can identify areas for improvement and set new goals for our development as leaders.  This is essential for leaders as we want to improve their leadership approach and help us to become more reflective and empathetic leaders.

Moving forward with purpose

Reflecting on our past is not about resting on our laurels but moving forward purposefully. It is about understanding the journey we have undertaken, appreciating our progress, and using this knowledge to inform our future actions. As we continue to climb the metaphorical steps in our professional lives, we must remember to occasionally pause, look back, and acknowledge how far we have come.

This practice of reflection will enhance our personal and professional growth and inspire and motivate our teams. By celebrating our achievements, learning from our experiences, and building resilience, we create a strong foundation for future success.

So, the next time you find yourself engrossed in the challenges of the present or the ambitions of the future, take a moment to look back. Reflect on the journey you have undertaken, appreciate your progress, and use these reflections to guide your path forward. In doing so, you will become a better leader and create a more resilient and motivated team. And it makes reaching the summit that much sweeter.

And as always, if you invest in yourself, and your team, the rewards will be unfathomable.

Until next time.
